What happens
Morgan Stanley says it is among the first banks to tokenize real world assets through the DTCC Tokenization Service, or DTS. In a post on X on 3 Nov, the bank said it converted US equities and US Treasuries into tokenized form.
DTS went live on 28 Oct. It is run by DTC, the depository arm of DTCC, the company that clears and settles most US stock and bond trades. DTC mints tokens that represent securities it already holds. DTCC says these digital twins keep the same ownership rights, investor protections and economic entitlements as the originals, and users can switch between the two forms.
Morgan Stanley did not disclose the size of the operation or which securities were involved.
The numbers
DTC holds more than $114 trillion in assets under custody.
20 participants signed up at launch, including Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, Citi, Bank of America, Fidelity Investments, State Street, UBS and Citadel Securities. DTCC says more users will be onboarded on a rolling basis.
The scope comes from an SEC no action letter of December 2025: Russell 1000 stocks, ETFs tracking major indexes, and US Treasuries.
The service runs on two networks today, the Canton Network and DTCC's private Besu network. More blockchains are planned for 2027.
What I'm watching
First, volume. A bank saying it is first is a headline. Disclosed tokenized amounts would be a trend.
Second, which networks get added in 2027. Today Canton is the only network named next to DTCC's private Besu network, which is why $CC sits at the center of this story.
Third, Morgan Stanley's own trading venue. The Block reports the bank now expects to support tokenized equities on its alternative trading system in Q1 2027, later than its earlier second half 2026 target.
My view: this is not a retail product and not a price catalyst on its own. It is the plumbing of US markets moving on chain, one custody account at a time. The real signal will be the first published volumes and the next networks DTCC chooses.
