What happens
On October 8, 2026, Starknet said it is actively considering becoming its own Layer 1, with the goal of being the first fully quantum resistant network by 2027.
Starknet already runs on STARK proofs, which are built on hash based math rather than the elliptic curve signatures most chains use today. As a Layer 2, it still depends on Ethereum, which targets full quantum resistance only by late 2029, according to StarkWare's CEO.
The numbers
- Price: $0.0692 at 05:16 UTC on October 9, up about 41% in 24 hours
- 30 day move: about +120%
- All time high: $4.41, so STRK still sits about 98% below its peak
- Futures volume: about 5x spot volume during the move
What I'm watching
This is a proposal, not a decision. It needs governance approval, and no timeline for a vote has been set. A rally driven mostly by futures can retrace fast once leverage unwinds.
The real signal will be a formal governance proposal and a technical roadmap for the move from Layer 2 to Layer 1.
